Sadiyah Malcolm

Sadiyah Malcolm began working at the Center for Social Solutions in the summer of 2023 as a Rackham Doctoral intern. As a new member of the staff, Sadiyah has enjoyed working closely with the community fellows to attend to community needs and visions. Most recently, she has been finding research focused on Flint according to the social determinants of health. She notes, “reparations is a matter of human rights; our community fellows are doing amazing work, and I’m proud to be a part of this transformative work.”

W.E.B. DU BOIS AT 150

   

The great African-American sociologist, historian and writer W.E.B. Du Bois was born 150 years ago this week. His classic book, The Souls of Black Folk, has been republished with a new introduction.

the Black Girls Lit(eracy) project

The initiative, created to promote literacy amongst Black Girls in Philadelphia, received 397 book donations on a rolling basis throughout the summer of 2017. Attached with each book was a note of encouragement from community members emphasizing the importance of literacy.  A portion of the books collected through the Black Girls Lit(eracy) project were donated to social service agencies, a local Church’s women’s ministry, and to the Southwest Police Athletic League Center’s Library. All others were given directly to the young women.

CONSCIOUS BLACKNESS: THE EXPERIENCES OF US STUDENTS IN THE UK

   

After hearing about the death of Terence Crutcher – an unarmed black man killed by police in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Sadiyah Malcolm couldn’t sleep. She recalls spending the night talking to her roommate about what had happened.
“It kept me up for so long,” said Malcolm, a 21-year-old student from Howard University, who is currently studying in Europe.
While walking to class in central London the following morning, Malcolm remembers hearing a broadcast about the shooting.
